    Ode to Portuguese Sausage

image via There’s something magical about simmering slices of Portuguese sausage on the stove top. The smell of the pungent spiced pork meat takes me back to childhood, takes me to the living room in our Ha’iku home. The rare moments our family would be all together and happy were with that sausage. It was the sign that the day was gonna be great – awesome, even. It speaks of warm houses with cool tropical breezes ruffling the place mats. It conjures up memories of sitting on the floor at the low Asian style table watching football while piles of the savory sausage were plated out. The satisfying crisp of…

    A Fond Farewell

This last week, while I was not writing here, I was on Maui celebrating with my family. My Aunt Ferne passed a few weeks ago and as a result, my family got together and spent a week partying, celebrating her life and giving her one last toast. Yes, it’s quite Irish of us. Scotch-Irish to be exact. Here’s a few snaps from my time there: Blue skies… all damn day long… sigh, so nice. My favorite spot on my aunty and uncle’s front lawn. Yes, that’s their infinity pool. Family playing in the pool. Aunty sporting her British accessories she wore to her daughter’s wedding in Ireland – quite swank,…

A Dedication to a Woman Most Special

Today, there is a hole in my heart. My beautiful ninety-four year old aunt passed away in her sleep two nights ago. She was the sister to my grandmother, the woman who helped to raise me, and like her she had a strong will, incredible wit and a deep abiding love for shoes. She was born in Louisiana, spent a few years there before moving to Hawai’i with her family. Many years later she got married to her long time husband Lucien Parish, a fighter pilot for the US Air Force, and enjoyed a life filled with travel and family. On her wedding day. The young woman behind her is…

    Misty Mountains

Misty Mountains are one of my favorite things. When I wrote my first romance about a woman traveling to Scotland it was an easy surrounding to dive into. Scotland is similar to Portland as it is to my home town on Maui. The mountains are misty. The picture above is taken off my phone (apologies for the crappy pixelation  and while it was beautiful and ethereal when I took it, it seems a touch creepy now. Stalker-ish. Slasher-like in an old ’70’s film sort of way… ANYWAY) during my morning commute (walk) I get a good view of the Grotto on Rocky Butte. Rocky Butte is hard to build on…

    Maui on My Mind

photo [via] Maui, the Valley Isle, is winner of Conde Nast’s Best Island in the World award 17 times. Maui, my home.  First, I want to give Jennifer a big mahalo for hosting me today. I’m on tour with my new book Forged, a high-octane romance both in and out of the bedroom, as one reader put it!  My newest work, Forged. Jennifer and I chatted recently about this post and Jennifer you mentioned that you’d been to Hawai’i to the island of O’ahu but had yet to go to Maui. So with a little help from photos and links I’ve got a great post today enticing you to the…
